Event Recap – UK IPv6 Council Annual Meeting

FastNetMon at UK IPv6 Council Annual Meeting 2024

FastNetMon had the privilege of participating in the UK IPv6 Council Annual Meeting held last Tuesday, November 19th, 2024 at Cisco Meraki in London. The event was a melting pot of knowledge and expertise, with very interesting talks from industry leaders in the Internet, telco, and networking fields. Here’s our recap of the highlights!

From FastNetMon, Pavel Odintsov delivered a talk about the journey towards IPv6 households, sharing some of his personal anecdotes of building an IPv6-only (or IPv6-mostly) work setup. You can find his presentation slides below!

The event ran for the entire day, featuring one great presentation after another. Veronika McKillop, President of the UK IPv6 Council opened the presentations with a look at the impressive growth of IPv6 over the last decade, charting its rise from a mere 1% to a significant 40%. This was followed by Richard Patterson from Sky, who brought attention to an unexpected advantage of MAP-T deployment, revealing its potential for basic DDoS protection, and shared that Sky employs an 8:1 sharing ratio for their MAP-T deployment in the UK.

Another interesting presentation was by Wilhelm Boeddinghaus from Route 128, who shared his insights about deploying IPv6 for large organizations in Germany. This topic was complemented by David Stockdale from Imperial College London, who shared his institution’s journey with IPv6 deployment, providing a unique perspective from one of the UK’s largest universities.

Further on, Tommy Jensen from Microsoft shifted the focus to the technical aspects, emphasizing the crucial role of CLAT in enabling IPv6 compatibility for older Windows applications. This was followed by Paulius Judickas from IPXO, who offered valuable data on the dynamics of IPv4 trading.
