FastNetMon extends real-time network visibility and analytics into Google Cloud environments by leveraging native VPC Flow Logs. It enables operators to monitor traffic patterns, identify anomalies and support network security decisions within Google Cloud workloads.
What It Does
FastNetMon ingests VPC Flow Logs exported from Google Cloud into a processing pipeline where traffic telemetry is transformed and analysed. This gives you insight into:
- Traffic entering and leaving Google Cloud resources
- Top talkers and high-traffic paths
- Anomalous usage patterns indicative of performance issues or attacks
- Distribution of traffic by source, destination, subnet and region
To feed Flow Logs into FastNetMon, you export them from Google Cloud to Pub/Sub and use a lightweight processor to convert them into FastNetMon’s analysis format.
How It Works
- Enable VPC Flow Logs for your VPC networks/subnets in the Google Cloud Console or via API/CLI. These logs capture sampled network flows across your cloud infrastructure.
- Export flow logs to Cloud Pub/Sub, where a FastNetMon component reads them in real time.
- A flow log processor converts the logs into a format FastNetMon can analyse, feeding them into the FastNetMon engine for metrics and detection.
- FastNetMon’s dashboards and alerts surface insights and anomalies for network monitoring and operational decision-making.
This approach decouples collection from analysis, allowing you to scale and centralise network monitoring across regions and projects.
Key Benefits
- Cloud-native visibility: Uses Google Cloud’s native VPC Flow Logs for accurate telemetry across VPCs, subnets and instances.
- Real-time analysis: Continuous log ingestion supports near-real-time understanding of network traffic trends and anomalies.
- Integrated with existing pipelines: Works with Pub/Sub and standard Google Cloud logging exports to fit into your existing observability workflows.
- Actionable insights: Helps identify overloaded resources, unexpected traffic patterns, and lenses into traffic distribution (e.g., by region or autonomous system).
Deployment Options
FastNetMon in Google Cloud can be deployed to suit your architecture:
- Centralised instance that processes flow logs from all regions
- Per-region instances for distributed analysis
- Hybrid topology combining central and regional visibility for both local and global insights
Ideal Use Cases
FastNetMon’s Google Cloud integration is suitable for:
- Network operations teams seeking enhanced visibility into VPC traffic
- Security teams tracking anomalous or suspicious network behaviour
- Engineering teams diagnosing performance or over-utilisation conditions
- Hybrid environments where cloud and on-premise traffic visibility needs to be unified
