German police have announced the disruption of a DDoS-for-hire platform dstat[.]cc. The platform has been playing a significant role in facilitating distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and the crackdown is a big victory for cybercrime defense.
German law enforcement describes dstat[.]cc as a platform that was provided evaluations of stressor services, which are used to conduct DDoS attacks. Platforms like dstat[cc] make it possible for attackers without technical skills to hire and orchestrate cybercrime.
Industry research has shown that dstat[.]cc offered botnet owners the ability to assess their DDoS attack services’ capacity and capabilities. The platform collected data from demonstration attacks, providing reviews and contact information for booter services, enabling potential subscribers to compare and find the best service for their malicious intents.
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with this platform. They are also accused of providing criminal infrastructure for narcotics trafficking.
The takedown of dstat[.]cc is part of the ongoing PowerOFF operation coordinated by an international group of law enforcement, which has led to the closure of several DDoS-for-hire sites.
