BalticNOG 2025 event recap FastNetMon 1

Last week we joined the Baltic network operator community in Vilnius for BalticNOG 2025. The two-day event brought together engineers, researchers, and operators from across the region to share knowledge and experiences on building and securing the internet.

The programme was packed with technical depth and practical insights. From Geoff Huston’s thought-provoking “Networking in the Dark” to hands-on case studies and lively panels, the event reinforced BalticNOG’s role as one of the most valuable community-driven gatherings for network professionals.

Bringing BGP Flow Spec Into Practice for DDoS Mitigation

FastNetMon Co-Founder Pavel Odintsov took the stage on day one to present about BGP Flow Spec for DDoS mitigation. His session focused on the realities of deploying Flow Spec in production environments, including varying levels of vendor support and common implementation pitfalls. With DDoS remaining a major operational challenge, the session resonated strongly with the operator audience and sparked valuable discussion. Get the presentation slides here!

Other Highlights

One of the standout talks came from Timur Pertenava of RETN, who shared his perspective on “Future-Proofing Global Connectivity: Trends, Threats, and Tactics for a Resilient Network.” His insights into building resilience into backbone infrastructure resonated with many in the room who face similar challenges in their own networks.

The Network Resilience Panel also sparked an engaging discussion on how operators can maintain stability under pressure, bringing together different perspectives from across the community. Later in the programme, several speakers provided updates on building secure and reliable infrastructure in difficult environments, alongside practical sessions on defending peering networks against DDoS and blackholing risks.

Another memorable moment was Paulius Judickas’s presentation “The Curious Case of IPv4: Sustaining the Internet Until IPv6 Arrives.” This talk revisited the ongoing reality of IPv4 scarcity and the creative ways in which the industry continues to extend its lifetime while preparing for broader IPv6 adoption.

Day two continued with an equally strong set of sessions on automation, orchestration, and datacenter networking best practices. The panel discussion “IPv6: From Hype to Reality” generated particularly lively debate on the pace of adoption, shedding light on both successes and remaining barriers in moving toward a fully IPv6-enabled internet.

Looking Ahead

As always, BalticNOG delivered on its reputation: a highly technical, community-driven event with open knowledge sharing at its core. We were glad to meet many friends, partners and customers, and to contribute to the ongoing conversation on how to make networks more resilient against ever-changing threats.

And of course, we also gave away some cool FastNetMon merch at the sticker table, which proved to be a popular stop for attendees.

A big thank you to the organisers and volunteers who made the event possible. We’re already looking forward to the next one!
