NTT Docomo, Japan’s largest mobile operator was recently hit by a DDoS attack. On January 2nd, 2025 the company experienced significant network congestion from 05:27 to 16:10, impacting key services like the “goo” web portal, Lemino video streaming, dpay billing service, and “Golf me” golf-round service. This disruption affected nearly 90 million subscribers and highlights the growing intensity and frequency of cyber threats facing global telecom networks.
This incident is part of a broader trend, as evidenced by a report from Stormwall noting a 102% increase in DDoS attacks globally in the first half of 2024 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Nokia’s research indicates a surge in attacks on telecom networks, escalating from one or two per day in mid-2023 to over 100 daily in some cases by mid-2024.
Telecommunications companies, with their critical infrastructure and massive user base, are particularly susceptible to such disruptions. The low tolerance for outages in this sector not only affects service availability but can also have broader economic impacts. This incident did not affect mobile phone services directly, but the disruption to additional services is a stark reminder of the need for robust anti-DDoS measures in the Telecommunications sector.
