Recent large-scale carpet-bomb DDoS attacks in Japan have showed the evolving risks facing critical infrastructure. Unlike traditional DDoS attacks that overwhelm specific servers, carpet-bombing targets multiple devices across a network, significantly increasing disruption. The year-end and New Year period saw widespread outages affecting Japan Airlines, major banks like MUFG, Resona, and Mizuho, as well as telecom provider NTT Docomo.
According to Trend Micro, at least 300 hijacked IoT devices worldwide participated in 158 attacks on 64 Japanese businesses between December 26 and February 2. These compromised devices, including Wi-Fi routers and webcams, were remotely controlled through command servers, many based overseas. This type of attack spreads across multiple systems, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact entry points and mitigate damage before it spreads.
Despite having some DDoS protections in place, many affected businesses found their unprotected servers unable to withstand the attack. As a result, cybersecurity experts, including NTT Data’s Yuu Arai, have advocated for ‘active cyber defense’, which focuses on detecting and neutralising attack sources before they escalate. The Japanese government is already considering legislation to implement such a strategy, demonstrating the urgency of the situation.
To understand more in detail what carpet bombing DDoS attacks are, read this article. The scale and complexity of modern DDoS attacks mean that proactive monitoring and automation are no longer optional. Partnering with FastNetMon ensures that organisations can respond swiftly, maintain uptime, and reduce the risk of prolonged service disruptions. FastNetMon can be configured to detect and block carpet-bomb attacks using per-hostgroup thresholds. Have a look at our documentation to see how this works.
