FastNetMon RONOG 10 event recap

On 18 September 2025, the Romanian Network Operators Group hosted RONOG 10 in Bucharest. The one-day conference, organised by InterLAN, brought together network operators, engineers, regulators, and technology providers to share technical knowledge and exchange ideas.

Held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, the event combined presentations, networking breaks, and plenty of hallway conversations — creating a space where operators could discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping today’s Internet infrastructure.

Our colleague Virgil Truica presented “DDoS Attacks 2025: Trends & Mitigation – The Era of Hyper-Scale Attacks.”. Get the presentation slides here!

The talk explored how DDoS threats are evolving, with a particular focus on the rise of hyper-scale attacks that push existing defences to their limits. Virgil shared fresh statistics and recent trends observed across the global operator community, highlighting both shifts in attacker behaviour and the growing sophistication of their tools. The session also touched on practical mitigation approaches that can help operators stay prepared as these threats continue to scale.

Highlights from the agenda

Beyond FastNetMon’s contribution, the programme was full of insightful presentations spanning network resilience, automation, security, and future technologies.

The morning opened with a session on recent subsea cable disruptions, where RETN explored the cascading effects of failures on routing and resilience across Europe and Asia. Later, ZET.NET offered a fascinating look into how intelligent automation is enabling them to scale their global backbone towards 50 Tbps, providing a concrete example of automation as a necessity rather than a choice for operators running large infrastructures.

Security remained a strong theme throughout the day. NBIP examined the challenge of defending European networks against DDoS in an increasingly fragmented world, while Recorded Future gave a technical breakdown of the DDoSia cybercriminal group and their methods. These talks, together with Virgil’s, sparked plenty of discussion on how operators can share knowledge and strengthen defences collectively.

The agenda also branched into other pressing topics for operators. IPXO revisited the ongoing role of IPv4 in sustaining the Internet as IPv6 adoption progresses slowly, and RIPE NCC presented an update on Romania’s position as a growing interconnection hub in South Eastern Europe. Towards the end of the day, the focus shifted to people and technology, with sessions on workplace culture and mental health, as well as forward-looking perspectives on the role of AI and large language models in shaping the networks of the future.

Looking back

RONOG is not only a solid platform for knowledge sharing in the operator community, it’s also a genuinely enjoyable event. From the presentations and hallway chats to the afterparty, it was great to catch up with familiar faces and meet new ones.

We’re glad we could be part of the conversations on keeping networks secure and resilient — and already looking forward to the next edition.
